EMERGENCY SERVICE (24/7)

The emergency service is a low-threshold contact channel for journalists and media workers who need support in their acute safety situation. Through the emergency service, you are able to have advice and practical support for the first steps in challenging security situations, as well as guidance on the next steps towards the actual support.

 

You can contact the emergency service by call, sms or Signal.

TARGET GROUP

 

Emergency service is intended for:

 

  • Finnish journalists and media workers
  • journalists and media workers having residence in Finland
  • journalists and media workers working for Finnish journalism and media organizations

The emergency service provides international support and can be contacted from Finland and abroad.

 

RESPONSE TIME

 

We provide the emergency service in addition to our other operations, which can occasionally cause a delay in response times. We usually respond the contacts immediately or within half an hour, and our longest response delay is usually a maximum of four (4) hours. If we are unable to answer at the exact time you contact us, we will contact you as soon as possible.

 

LIMITATIONS ABROAD

 

We currently do the international communications only via Signal. We do not answer or call back regular calls or text messages from abroad or from foreign phone numbers.

 

SIGNAL LIMITATIONS

 

Signal and its network traffic occasionally experience disturbances, due to which Signal may not forward your messages or calls to us immediately. If your matter cannot tolerate a delay or you do not receive a response to your contact attempt via Signal within our maximum delay (4 hours), we recommend using a normal phone call, text message or flash call.

 

INFORMATION SECURITY LIMITATIONS

 

Journalists are constantly targeted by cyber attacks as well as physical and technical surveillance around the world. The phone number of our emergency service is public and it works on public telephone network, so the possibility of external surveillance or hostile data breach cannot be completely excluded or completely prevented.

 

In your contacts, we recommend that you use contact information and other identifying content that can withstand public disclosure in the event of a hostile data breach.

 

If the disclosure of your identity to outsiders may cause any harm, we recommend that you use anonymous network connections, devices and contact information when contacting to us.

 

For cyber security reasons, we recommend that you handle the sensitive matters only in personal meetings. If your matter is sensitive, just leave us a meeting request.

 

USER FEES

 

MediaTurva does not charge any fees for the emergency service. The emergency service is provided via Finnish phone operator located in Finland, and calls to it are charged according to the fees of your own phone contract.

 

PRIVACY

 

MediaTurva does not store or register the personal data of the users of its emergency service, nor does it maintain personal registers related to its emergency service. MediaTurva does not hand over the information of emergency service users to a third party.
